Some good news from The Conversation for you on this grey November morning. It turns out we're more altruistic than we give ourselves credit for, when dealing with water instead of money.
This saved Cape Town from near disaster during its recent "mega-drought". Water levels were so low that the city narrowly avoided having to turn off its water, thanks to everyone putting others first, and drastically reducing their water consumption for the good of the whole city.
Research found people are more generous with primary resources, like water and food, than with secondary resources, like money. It is thought this is because we have 'increased empathy towards others with a similar need which makes altruistic behaviour more likely'.
